The north side of the Madulce Peak ridge was (blessedly) 10-15 degrees cooler than the south side. The traill switched back and forth between the north and south slopes as it traveled east along the ridge. This shot is looking north back into Santa Barbara Canyon.

No more "road" at this point as the trail was nothing more than a small break in the slope. Had a little trouble with my right knee on the uneven terrain, but it settled down after a half mile or so.

The sign marking the Madulce Peak spur was not anchored and could spin freely, so it was not obvious what the correct trail was. (The Santa Barbara trail involved a left turn and the Mudulce Peak spur continued straight ahead)

The trail quickly decended to a dry creek canyon and followed it downstream. This shot is one of the numerous dry creekbed crossings.

A black bear watches me from near the trail camp. Despite the multitude of tracks and scat, this was the only bear I saw all day.

Trailsign before the Madulce Ranger Station. The "Malduce Lo Trail" is the prior junction. Have no idea where Buckhorn Road is, as it does not seem to appear on the maps. Last comment 12/02/2004.
