 Hunting Hollow, Henry W. Coe

Day Hike in the southern end of Henry W. Coe State Park

Arrived at the Hunting Hollow trailhead around 8 for what turned out to be a pretty grueling 22 mile lollipop loop to Burra Burra Peak. Though the elevation difference between the trailhead and the peaks is not very great (the trailhead is at 900ft, and the peaks are at 2200) the trails themselves tend to roll up and down over each ridge- total elevation gain for the day was near 4300 ft.

This trail is endangered by a current proposal to build a number of dams in the park. The Los Osos Reservior in particular would flood the Hunting Hollow trail head and creekbed that was the early portion of today's hike. More information on this project and the effort to prevent it can be found here.

Note: The new Dowdy Ranch park entrance (opened in the spring of 2007) makes Burra Burra a much less epic outing.

Relevant portion of the park trail map. Started at the Hunting Hollow trailhead in the southwest corner of the map. Followed route similar to Bob Burd's 2001 trip. His pictures and excellent trip report can be found here.
Stream crossing of Hunting Hollow creek about 50 yards into the trail. Managed to get across this crossing (and the 4 to follow without getting my feet wet, though the wet grass on the ridges quickly had my feet soaked anyway)

First trail junction, leaving the Hunting Hollow trail for the Lyman Wilson Ridge Road. This was also the first hill, gaining about a 1000ft in a mile. The trail, like most in the park, has no switchbacks and climbs directly up and over the ridges in a straight line.

There were some cattle grazing on the hillside along this portion of the trail, and gates at the beginning and end to keep them from wandering off.

View back down the trail to the Hunting Hollow valley. Pretty typical of the views in this portion of the park.

One of the many ponds created by the recent rains. Note that the trail at this point is now going through knee high grass. The grass was wet from last nights rain and got my feet pretty well soaked.

Some deer on the ridge above the trail. Weather was overcast, windy, and threatening rain all day.
