 Jackson & Launtz Creek Camps
Fish camp on the banks of the Little Sur, often mistaken for Jackson Camp.

From K. Vendevere on the VWA forum: "The scouts you've talked to are correct. The now rundown and little used upstream camp was once much more open, had several stoves, etc. and was definitely the official "Jackson Camp." The little downstream camp where the trail meets the river was simply a use camp, inhabited primarily by uniformed hikers who didn't realize that a much nicer camp was just a little further up the trail. Like many streamside use camps, it was referred to by the generic term "Fish Camp." Over the years Fish Camp has become more and more heavily used, while Jackson Camp has begun to fade away. Odd, since Jackson Camp was really a much nicer place. "

First Little Sur river crossing upstream from Fish Camp. The river was about mid thigh deep here and right around my limit for what I'm willing to risk. I switched into my Tevas and SealSkinz and negotiated the crossing w/o issue.

Jackson Camp proper. 2 river crossings past Fish Camp. (Perhaps another reason for the popularity of Fish Camp is that it is accessable when the river is high)

6th crossing and the first that I wasn't willing to risk crossing. The water here is deep enough that my waist would have been submerged, making standing against the current difficult. My attempt at the Window would have to wait till later in the season. It was a little after 8:30 at this point, so I sat down, pulled out my map, and tried to decide what to do with the remainder of the day.

Short movie clip of the river giving a much better feel for the current than the still shot. (10sec clip, 6M download)

Standing in the river. Tried taking a picture in deeper water, but the current almost knocked me off my feet. Decided to stop messing with the camera at that point.

Back at fish camp, drying off my numb feet and putting dry shoes back on. Headed back to the trail junction.
