 Jackson & Launtz Creek Camps

My original plans for today were to take a shot at summiting Kandlbinder and the Ventana Window but conditions on the Little Sur river tempered those goals.

I arrived at the Bottchers Gap trailhead around 5:30 and was greeted by Larry the camp host. (Does he ever sleep?) We chatted for a bit and he made sure that I was aware of what I was getting myself into. He remembered Bob (that guy from summitpost) and Matt (his friend) from their unsuccessful attempt last year) and noted that most successful day summits had been done by NPS personell who were able to avoid the 7 mile roundtrip on the BSA road by driving down to the camp. He asked me how long he should wait before calling in the SAR team and then wished me well as I headed down towards the BSA camp...

Pico Blanco from the first switchback as I headed down to the Boy Scout camp. Light enough to see at this point and I ended up not needing my headlamp today.

Footbridge crossing the swollen Little Sur river in the heart of the BSA camp. Noone home at the camp proper, though the occupants of the entrance station were stirring as I passed.

Another bad picture of the Little Sur Trail sign. Right turn takes one towards Pico Blanco. Straight heads toward some water tanks for the BSA camp, left brings one to Jackson Camp. My initial route today was left, though I would travel all three branches by the end of the day.

The trail to Jackson Camp looped around this side canyon housing a Little Sur River tributary stream. Lots of water today.
