Post Indian Fire Opening Day morning trip from Memorial Park to the Junipero Serra summit

(And if you are looking for more post-fire trip reports, XasauanToday has an excellent writeup of a Bottchers Gap to Little Pine outing here)

Leaving from the trailhead a little after 6am. I think this was my 6th trip up JSP. It had rained a bit overnight and the grass was a bit damp. Today was first day the Monterey Ranger District was open after last year's Indian Fire.

I didn't bring my GPS, so no tracks/map. (The map/tracks from my last trip show the route: here)

The trailhead sign was still present, as were the VWA brochures. (I'm not sure if the parking lot didn't burn or if the fence was replaced. You can see the section on the left where the barbed wire had been replace w/ red tape)

Field of knee high lupine shortly after the initial creek crossing. The lupine fields were almost overbearingly fragrant.

More lupine. The old "Pimkolam Peak" sign pointing to the correct route amidst the use trails criscrossing the field is now just a stump.

An early look at Junipero Serra from the trail. About 80-90% of the route of the trail had burned. For the chaparral sections this meant skeletons alongside the path. About 6-18 inches of new growth on most of them tho.

Lupine and the burned remains of the invasive prickly pear stand.
Here is the stand in 2003.

The tractor survived, looking more or less the same as it did before the fire. Anyone know exactly how old this thing is? I've talked to folks that report seeing it as far back as the mid '70's.

The trail headed out of the grassland into the low lying forest at the base of the canyon. The trees here were mostly burned but still standing.
