 Lake Vernon 2006

Winter showshoe hike to Lake Vernon

If your looking for a summer hike to the Hetch Hetchy high country, see here

Hit the Hetch Hetchy backpackers lot a little before noon on Friday after driving from Reno in the morning and picking up my backcountry permit from the gate ranger. Beautiful cloudless day and unseasonably warm for February.

Packed up and ready to head down to the dam. (The backpacker's lot is irritatingly far away from the main parking area). In shorts and a t-shirt for the early part of the trip, with my winter gear mostly strapped to the back of the pack.

Heading down to O'Shaughnessy Dam with Wapama Falls in the background. The water level in the reservoir was fairly low and nowhere near the springtime levels

Konana Rock and the reservoir. I had once thought that the peak above Kolana was Smith Peak, but Smith is further up the canyon. (The peak above Kolana is unnamed peak 7093)

The road up from the reservoir switchbacks along an old roadbed and climbs steadily up the canyon wall.

A creek crossing a bit past the trail junction. In past trips with a higher creek, I've used the log to navigate the stream. No need for that today,
