 McKinley & San Rafael Mountains

Cloudy dayhike to McKinley Mountain and San Rafael Mountain
Blog post on the outing: here

Better pictures (but more snow) on this winter trip as far as McKinley Spring or this summer trip to Santa Cruz Peak.

Note: This area was heavily burned in the 2007 Zaca Fire. Trail routings and conditions may have changed since this trip report.

Topo and GPS tracks for today's 21-22 mile outing. Took the firebreak on the way out (the straight line on the left) vs. the road on the return trip.

At the trailhead a little after 7 after the 4-5 hour drive south from Mountain View. Mid 40's and calm at the trailhead.

Looking at the trailhead gate from the parking lot. The ridge above was clouded in and would remain so for most of the day.

Turned onto the firebreak about a quarter mile up the trail. (The firebreak is quite steep, but cuts a mile or so off this leg of the route). Only about 20 feet visibility in any direction at this point.

Up atop the ridge about 20 minutes later and back onto the road. Still can't see more than 20 feel.

A very brief glimpse of the first sunlight of the day. (And from a pevious trip, this saddle has cell phone reception)
