This gate at China Camp is the entrance to Jeffery Road and was the start of todays outing. Hit the trail a little later than I had hoped (around 7:30, wasting an hour or so of daylight) after leaving Mountain View a little before 4 am. There was a single party camped at China Camp when I left. They would still be there when I returned and were the only people (besides Jack English) who I would see all day.

Jeffery Road headed (fairly steeply) downhill past a number of private estates. Temps were in the 40s this morning, but I didn't see any frost.

Little spur where the trail leaves the road for 50 yards or so. These yellow trail signs marked most of the trail through the private lands.

Warped wooden gate at the entrance to the Ventana Wilderness. Was a bit difficult getting it closed again once opened. The sign on the left reads: "You are entering USDA Forest Service Miller Canyon Livestock Grazing Allotment Area. Please be aware that cattle are grazing for the next 7 miles. Please leave gates as you find them and use walkthroughs when available. Please do not disturb livestock or discharge any firearms unless hunting. The Miller Canyon grazing allotment was established in 1906 and has been in continual use by the Nason family. Cattle are grazed annually from March to October. Any comments or concerns can be addressed to the US Forest Service, Monterey Ranger District. Thank you for your cooperation"

Spring along the trail. Only a trickle of water in the spring, but water would be abundant later on during the day.

The trail was easy to follow and mostly downhill with few deadfalls to navigate. Lots of game/use trails leading off the main trail.

One of two or three minor ridges before the Nason Cabin site. (Didn't actually see the cabin, not sure if I just missed it or if it is no longer there).

Looking across Miller Canyon. For the first several miles, the river was well below the trail. Ran into my only routefinding difficulty on the descent from the Nason Cabin ridge. There were several use trails leading off from the ridge that were more prominant than the real trail. Took the wrong one and needed to backtrack after it dwindled away to nothing.
