Morning scramble to the to of Mt Dana
Topo map of the area

Arrived at the Tuolumne Meadows campground well after dark on Friday and got a few hours of sleep before our early morning start. For several in the group, this was a training trip for a planned ascent of Whitney next month. We arrived at the trailhead and were on our way by 6am.

At 13,057, Mt Dana is the second highest point in Yosemite, losing to Mt Lyell by about 50 feet. As this was my first time above 10,000ft, I was a bit worried about the altitude but ended up not having any problems. The weather was near perfect and there was not a cloud in the sky when we reached the summit.

The trailhead is at the Tioga Pass entrance to the park and the trail skirts the park boundary. It is not an official, maintained Yosemite trail so the trailhead is not marked and there are no signs along the way.

Another trip to Dana (and continuing on to Gibbs) in Aug 2004 can be found here

Field of snow along the trail. There were numerous patches such of this, but nowhere were we forced to traverse snowpack.
