The trail took a non-obvious hard left at this boggy meadow and became somewhat harder to follow from here.

At about 8000 ft, the Nightcap trail reached its apex, providing a great view of the Relief Reservoir

Since the Nightcap trail headed downward, I left it and headed up the slope. My path would take me to the right of the snowfield in the center of the frame. (This required crossing a small creek canyon that was in the way)

Up near the small snowfield, about halfway up to the ridgetop. Loose sandy gravel on the slopes at this elevation, and I was glad to be wearing gaiters.

A shelter built into a small cave in the cliff face. There were remains of a number of campfires along the ridge near here.

Up on the ridgetop, looking northward. The northern slope (heading down to Deadman creek) was still mostly snow covered. Route 108 visible on the opposite side of the canyon.

Had almost a mile to travel along the ridgetop, and another 1500 feet of elevation to gain. First goal would be to head around the minor highpoint on the right over to the saddle on the opposite side.

Looking back down at the slope I had ascended. (The snowfield midframe is the same one seen in the earlier picture)
