Topo and GPS tracks for today's outing. 15.5 miles and 3700ft gain from the Eagle Falls/Emerald Bay trailhead.

Phipps was my 36th OGUL peak.

I had the option of leaving from either the Bayview or the Eagle Falls trailheads. I had done Bayview for Dicks, so I opted for the Eagle Falls option. Both involve a fair amount of initial elevation gain.

Stairsteps in the beginning, passing a junction for the Eagle Loop trail and over a bridge spanning the Eagle Lake outlet creek. Lots of hikers on the lower trail.

Looking across at the impressive backside of Jakes Peak, which for some reason was omitted from the OGUL. (But Adams, of course, made the list)

Up, up, up through the tediously rocky trail characteristic of the Desolation wilderness.

More canyonside uphill.

Eagle Lake was very still and reflective in the morning. There would be a wind creating wavelets on the return trip.

The trail passed almost directly below the northernmost of Maggies Peaks. It looked as if there was a brush free talus chute that could be used to reach the saddle from this side.

Continuing uphill, passing a dozen or so hikers/backpackers in the process.
