The trail soon topped out on the ridge and headed back down to Chalone Creek, losing all of the elevation I had just earned and more. Very clear morning.

Down at the (bone dry) Chalone Creek. Left turn to head up towards the Balconies Caves.

Looking back at the trail junction. Uphill (right) was the path I had descended and heads to the High Peaks. Downhill (left) goes down to meet and then follow the entrance road back to the Bear Creek Picnic area.

No water in the creek today. (The only time I've seen water in this section of the creek was when I was here hiking in a downpour in early 05)

The flat sandy bottom of the trail was a welcome respite. A few years ago, the park service rerouted this section of trail as part of a restoration project.
