Just a quick afternoon trip up to Sonora Peak from Sonora Pass today. (I was passing through Sonora Pass around 4pm and decided to catch the sunset from the Peak). This was my third summit of Sonora, the last one in the Spring of 07

The St. Mary's Pass trailhead. A single car in the parking lot, but I wouldn't see anyone out on the trail today. Sonora Peak was off to the right, about a crow flies mile from the trailhead.

The trail headed up to St. Mary's Pass to gain the high plateau and then followed a use trail from the pass to the summit. Nice warm day today. Brought a jacket but ended up leaving it in the pack.

The trail soon gave a nice view to the south as it climbed above Sonora Pass (about a quarter mile past the trailhead). Leavitt Peak was the primary landmark on the southern horizen. I had gone that route a few weeks back on this trip

Heading fairly steeply up the pass. No more snow at this late date but a couple of springs left the trail damp in a few places.

Up atop St Mary's Pass. Now had a good view of Stanislaus Peak (The cinder cone in the distance)

Turning right from the pass there was a use trail leading up to the next plateau. The poles are signs marking the wilderness boundary to ward of winter snowmobilers.

The trail soon gained the high plateau and Sonora once again came into view. There was a use trail visible off to the left (that I didn't remember from my past visits) that I headed toward.

The high plateau was coated with these purple wildflowers (lupines?). The air was heavy with pollen and the buzzing of bumblebees inside the fields.
