Topo and GPS tracks for today's scramble from Christmas Tree Pass to the Spirit Mountain summit.

The western route was the cairned "standard" route. Took this on my return leg.
The eastern route was a ridge traverse that, in retrospect, was a pretty bad idea.

When I saw "Chirstmas Tree Pass" on the map I figured there was a fir tree forest near the pass. Instead the locals apparently decorate the desert Junipers with Christmas decorations. (And at least one of them had hanging beer cans)

Zdon's book mentioned a spur road north and I initially missed the turnoff and had to backtrack. (The road north is now blocked by wilderness signs)

The tree next to my car had a smattering of Christmas Tree ornaments.

From the summitpost route description:

"From the starting point of the route, the south ridge is readily accessible and looks to be a much easier and more direct means to achieve the summit. Think again. The crags along the spine of the ridge (and all along its sides) are much larger and impenetrable than they look from a distance"

Probably should have read that more carefully :)
But instead I started up the ridge on the right.

Heading upslope. Barrel Cacti, Mojave Yucca, Junipers, and Teddybear Cholla among the fauna today. (Once again, pretty much everything on the route had thorns)
