Marking indicating water off to the east. I think this is pointing to the original Little Pines campsite and/or the old Rattlesnake trail. Both should be in this area.

This is where I headed upslope when I climbed Uncle Sam. Not sure this was the best route, but since the main trail drops steadily toward the gap any other route would have meant more offtrail vertical. There was no water at the trail, but the creek could be heard emerging from the ground somewhere not too far downstream.

Remains of the trailsign at the Puerto Suello Gap and the junction of the top of the Puerto Suello trail leading up from hiding camp (Took this route on this trip a few years back and on my earlier trip to VDC from the dam)

Looking back at Uncle Sam from near the gap. Theres what looks like a clear (or relativly clear) route along the right side of the ridge leading up from the gap. This may be an easier route than the one I took.

Lots and lots of trees in bloom (Ceanothus?) along the trail leading to VDC. This section was the most overgrown of the day, but it had been pruned recently and wasn't in too bad shape.

VDC pops back into view (the backmost peak) but still had a couple of minor peaklets to traverse to get there. I believe that thats Ventana Cone visible off on the left.

Kandlbinder and the Window from along the VDC trail. Not a real good angle to view the window from. Pacific Ocean visible on the far right of the shot.

Another false summit on the horizen, though the VDC peak was not too far away at this point. The local insect population was beginning to waken by this point.

Approaching the point were the Kandlbinder/Window ridge connects with the Ventana Ridge (a bit before VDC). The trail would soon swing over to the east side of the ridge, blocking the view of Kandlbinder until the summit was reached.
