Looking down at Guitar Lake from about midway down the switchbacks on the back side of Trail Crest. I was exhausted when I reached the lake, and quicky set up my tent and fell asleep.

Dawn on Wednesday. A storm had moved in overnight and this was a brief break before it started a more serious daylong flurry. There were 4 of us camped at an upper satellite of Guitar Lake. Noone was going anywhere this morning.

Peeking out of the tent after the storm broke in the afternoon. Several inches here at the lake, more on the slopes above. One of the other campers tent hadn't weathered the storm and I took up an extra tenant until we broke camp the next day.

It looked like all of the nearby passes would have snow issues, so I abandoned my JMT plans and joined the other three in an attempt at crossing Trail Crest back to Whitney Portal. It was cold and windy, but sunny as we slowly picked our way through the foot deep snow on the JMT.

Lilian, Mike and Steve on the long arduous 2000ft/2.5 mile climb up the JMT to Trail Crest. Lillian got a head start and led for the early sections, Steve broke trial for the latter half. In retrospect, it probably would have been safer to head down to Crabtree and exit via Cottonwood.
