Had we continued following the wash, we would have eventually intersected the trail, but we were wary of wandering onto the ranch property and turned to head cross country towards the dam.

We arrived at the base of the dam in about 15 minutes.

This flock of quail darted across the rocks near the dam as we approached. (A quail flock is technically called a bevy. So there was a bevy at the levee, but the levee was dry.)
