Wednesday Update

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

– I don't know how I missed this for the past few months, but there is an extremely useful and active online community for those with leg injuries:  http://www.mybrokenleg.com/   Apparently, the black metallic walking cast that I have is known as a "Darth".  It also seems to be commonplace to lose weight while recovering from a broken leg.

- Saw Superman Returns tonight.  Good special effects, true to the franchise (John William's music is back), but in the end it was hard to overlook some major major plot issues.  Some the problems were standard action movie stuff- like Lois getting tossed against walls at high speed and suffering no ill effects or the film's generally selective application of the laws of physics.  One expects some amount of that type of thing.  Less forgivable were the major plot arcs left unresolved at the end of the film and the timeline inconsistencies (or at least improbabilities) between Superman II and this film.  The fatal flaw was the extremely poor handling of the Lois/Superman relationship story arc- something that had been done well in Superman II.  Superman's motivation for needing to suddenly disappear for 5 years seemed horribly contrived and it was hard to be sympathetic with his decision to barge into Lois's engagement once he was back.  Disappointing.

- The damn squirrels chewed through the rope on the bird feeder.  When I woke up this morning there were 3 of them happily chowing down on the spilled birdseed.

- Have a little swelling in the ankle today so I'm going to take it easy for a day or two until it subsides.  No real pain, but it doesn't feel as good as it did earlier in the week.

Inpatient Services

Monday, June 26th, 2006

The bills for my recent medical care have been dribbling in over the past week or so and I'm a bit shocked and appalled with the whole experience.  The medical billing system seems to be entirely without checks and balances. I have no real idea what I'm being charged for (and since the insurance is paying most of it I have no real incentive to question any of it.) The whole process seems rife with inefficiency and opportunities for fraud.

There's no coordinated billing and no consolidated statement of the medical care.  I've recieved seperate bills from 2 radiology departments, the hospital, the surgeon,  the ambulance company, and am expecting several more.

None of the statements have anything but an extremely vague line item covering the total from that provider.  I have no way to sanity check the accuracy of the statements.  If they wanted to bill me for something that I never recieved (intentionally or due to a bookkeeping error) I'd have no way of knowing.

Here's what has arrived so far:

Surgery

4,300

Ambulance

388

Medical Services

225

Supplies & Materials

25

X-rays

140

Inpatient Services

32,862

That 32K number is almost comical. Thats 16k per night for 2 nights in a hospital bed. I had an orthopedic injury, it wasn't exactly critical care. The insurance company negotiated this down to 4,500- an 85% discount. (Does anyone actually pay 32K? I'm assuming that if you don't have insurance, you probably don't have 16k per night to pay full retail.). I'd love to know what the $25 "Supply or Material" item was that apparently wasn't included in the 32k.

My out of pocket for the whole thing thus far is a little over 1k (and tax deductable) so at least I'm finally getting my money's worth for my health insurance.

Ankle Status

Saturday, June 24th, 2006

The ankle continues to improve with a couple of milestones today:

- First day completely without crutches.  Able to walk with just the walking cast now.  Little bit of pain in the heel after awhile but otherwise feeling good.

- Wore a shoe on the injured foot for the first time since the surgery.

- Drove for the first time.  Just a couple of miles to get my car back from Rahul's place.  Didn't have any difficulty pressing the pedals but angling my ankle is still a bit painful.

- First trip to the gym in 2 months.  Did a light upper body workout (mostly machines since its hard to carry freeweights with the leg) and spent 30 min on the recumbent bike on low intensity to start stretching out the ankle.

My formal physical therapy starts on July 14th.

Misc Updates

Thursday, June 22nd, 2006

- The ankle is feeling good. With the walking cast I'm able to put my full weight on it and walk without crutches.  Without the cast I can stand, but not apply my full weight.

- I moved the bird feeder two more times today.  Apparently squirrels can vertically leap a couple of feet.

– I walked over to Baskin Robbins in the afternoon.  The guy in front of me in line was in my CMU ECE graduating class 13 years ago.  Didn't recognize him at all, but he noticed the CMU gym shorts I was wearing and asked when I had attended.  Small world.

Fedak vs. Squirrel (Round 2)

 Squirrel

Last week I hung a bird feeder in my back yard just outside the window from my home office.  I quickly realized that the local squirrel population was able to stretch from the branch and reach down to the seed tray of the feeder.  After repositioning the feeder with a longer rope, I thought I had the issue solved.

This morning I was checking my email when I caught a motion out of the corner of my eye-  A squirrel had successfully dropped the 2-3 feet from the branch to the top of the feeder and was happily chowing down on the birdseed.

Need to try a longer rope or maybe try squirrel fishing.

Atrophy

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Ok, I figured out where some of the 15 pounds I lost over the last 6 weeks went- I've lost a fair bit of muscle mass in my injured leg.  The doc estimated it about 30%.  Lots of rehab ahead of me.

 Atrophy

Swimming went well this afternoon, or as well as could be expected for my first bit of exercise in a month or two.  Didn't kick much and didn't risk doing flip turns.

Walking Cast

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Got my cast off this morning.  The xrays looked good and I should eventually have a full recovery.  This is very good news given that they more or less had to completely reconstruct my ankle.

Next up is a  walking cast for 4-6 weeks.  I need to gradually start putting weight on it until I'm back to a normal gait.  For the initial phase, this just involves modifying the use of the crutches so that I'm swinging the crutches forward at the same time as my injured leg.  Normally, you'd lead with the healthy leg and bear no weight on the injured one. (Hear that Fernan?)

In a week or two I'll switch to a single crutch, followed by just the cast.  I'll be able to drive again as soon I can walk w/o crutches.  My physical therapy starts in about a month.  Curiously, I don't need to work on rotating my ankle at all- apparently that just takes care of itself.

I should be back to 100% in about a year.  Hope to be able to do some limited hiking in the fall and then back to normal for the 2007 summer season.  Going to go swimming this afternoon.

Minor Earthquake

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

There was a 4.7 magnitude quake near Gilroy Hot Springs this morning.

I slept through it up here in Mountain View.  I've now been in the Bay Area for about a decade and I've felt a total of 1 quake (plus a Seattle quake while on a business trip to Portland)

The epicenter (topo) was about a mile from the Coyote Creek entrance of Henry W Coe Park.

One more week

Monday, June 12th, 2006

One last week with the cast.  Suprisingly, the time thus far has actually gone quickly.

Even more suprisingly, I seem to have lost about 10 pounds over the period I've been houseridden.  I guess there's something to be said for the "Physically unable to go to McDonalds" diet plan.

Mom gone

Sunday, June 11th, 2006

My mom returned to Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon after spending a week helping me with my broken ankle.  Somewhat bittersweet as this was the first, and likely only, time in my adult life that I’d spend a week just hanging out with my mom.

Highlights:

- We started the monsterous task of scanning, organizing, and captioning the thousands of snapshots my mom has taken over the past three years.  I’ll have the first batch online sometime this week.

-  It had been 3-4 years since anyone had taken a good look at what was in the back of the fridge.  Scary stuff.

-  I apparently have never had all of my clothes washed at the same time- I don’t appear to have closet space for all of them at once.

- We saw Pixar’s Cars on opening day.  Not Pixar’s best (That is still The Incredibles) but a reasonable effort.  The plot seems to be lifted entirely from Michael J. Fox’s Doc Hollywood.  Don’t miss the ending credits where they reprise some scenes from prior Pixar films.
