OS Visit

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Nothing terribly interesting in my visit with the Orthopedic Surgeon this morning.  The bones are healing nicely and they renewed my Physical Therapy prescription for a few weeks.  I have my (presumably final) checkup in mid-September.

I'm trying to get copies of the x-rays, but there appears to be some bit of beaucracy surrounding the medical records.  They still archive the x-rays as actual film copies vs. an electronic format.  With the proper paperwork, they allow you to borrow the x-rays for a few days.  I'm going to try this and get them scanned myself.

Oh, and apparently I wasn't paying attention in my earlier visits.  I've got 4 screws rather than the 2 I thought I had.  (They're in 2 groups, this was the first time I'd gotten to see the xrays close up)

Airport Security

Sunday, July 30th, 2006

Flew for the first time with the hardware in my leg.  It looks like I don't have enough metal to set off the alarms.  No issues on either side of the flight.

Walking in dress shoes through the airport was another issue entirely and my ankle is pretty sore this morning.
I've got my latest visit with the orthopedic surgeon tomorrow (or rather his assistant- my OS is on sabbatical)

Back to the Backcountry

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

For the first time since my injury 11 weeks ago, I donned my hiking boots and headed out for some trail miles.  I was looking for something with gentle terrain and shaded from the summer sun and decided on a visit to nearby Portola Redwood State Park.  The hike itself was much as expected- the redwood canopy and the state park maintenance crews kept the trail well graded and well maintained.  However, the brutal heat wave that has been embroiling Silicon Valley wasn't diminished by the shade.  It was uncharactically hot and humid in the park and easily topped 100 degrees on the ridgetops.  Over the course of the day, the heat was much more bothersome than my ankle.

To support my ankle, I wore an ASO Ankle Stabilizing Brace.  This worked out quite well and fit comfortably inside my shoe without any discomfort.  My ankle held up well for much of the day, though I was limping noticeably by the end of the 8 miles.  I seemed to be over-pronating (rolling my ankle inward) more than I would normally, but this wasn't causing a substantial amount of pain.  Downhill sections of the trail were much more difficult than the uphills and trails that tilted to the left (in the direction of my overpronation) were more difficult than those that were graded to the right.

I had a substantial amount of muscle aching the next morning.  Trail hiking definitely hits all sort of stabilization muscle groups that you don't exercise while walking on smooth surfaces.

Pictures and commentary from the day are: here
I'm off to an out of town wedding next weekend, so it will probably be two weeks before I'm out on the trails again.

Compression Sock & Elliptical Trainer

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

- I picked up a low strength compression sock to wear for the days where I'm sitting in an office chair for 8 hours.  They're supposed to help prevent  swelling. (If not, then I just paid 25 bucks for a pair of tight dress socks)

- I hit the elliptical machine for 15 minutes today.  This was the first full weight bearing cardio since my injury.  No real pain in the ankle but the muscles in my right leg clearly weren't used to the effort.

Updates (or lack thereof)

Friday, July 14th, 2006

Nothing much new over here.

- I opted to roll off of my Reno work for the time being.  My Physical Therapy schedule would have made it inconvenient and I have no burning desire to deal with airports, rental cars, luggage, and hotels until I'm back closer to 100%.  So I'm sticking to local clients for the next couple of months.

- I've had 2 more Physical Therapy sessions since my last update.  I seem to have plateaued for the past couple days and there hasn't been much in the way of notiecable improvement.  The sessions have primarily been focusing on range of motion and I've been working on the strength exercises on my own.  Still have a fair amount of swelling in the ankle and being back at a desk has aggravated this somewhat.

First Physical Therapy Session

Friday, July 7th, 2006

Started my physical therapy this afternoon.  It had originally been scheduled for next Friday, but since I was walking/driving again I had it moved up a week.  The session went well- no real pain and it wasn't particularly taxing.  They didn't have any issues with the stuff I had been doing on my own and I can continue to go to the gym between sessions.

The session started with the insurance/medical paperwork followed by an assessment of the current state of my ankle.  My range of motion looked good but I had a bit more swelling than I should have and need to keep the leg elevated while at home.

The physical "workout" consisted of the following:
– 5 minute warmup on the exercise bike
– Standing "flamingo" style on just the injured ankle.  This was much harder than I was expecting as I've lost a lot of strength in the stabalizer muscles on that ankle.
– Standing squat style motion with my back against an exercise ball.  This didn't seem to tax the ankle at all, but my upper legs needed the workout.
– Calf stretches pusing againt a wall.  This is one of the more common stretches from my swimming days.

After the workout they iced up the ankle and applied some electrode based therapy that is supposed to help break up scar tissue.  My homework was to repeat the exercises 2 times a day on my own and have my next session on Monday.

 WestWing

Dr. Abbey Bartlett:  I was hiking, Oliver, I was hiking.  Are you really that much of an enemy of nature?

Oliver Babish:  Nature is to be protected from. Nature, like a woman, will seduce you with its sights,  its scents, and its touch, and then it breaks your ankle – also like a woman.

Dr. Abbey Bartlett: What the hell kind of dates are you going on Oliver?

Surgery Scar

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

Scar from my ankle surgery.  Its not too bad all things considered.  At least it will be under my sock line.  There is a smaller scar on the opposite side from two of the surgical staples.

June Webstats

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

June was a record traffic month for fedak.net.  The site got 34k non-search engine page views which handily broke last September's record of 26k.

At least some of this traffic pickup is due to a spambot attack that is repeatedly attempting to leave comment spam in the guestbook.  The attackers appear to be using a distributed bot net so IP banning has been ineffective in stopping it.  Instead, I've modded the guestbook code to silently ignore comments with multiple URLs.  This hasn't stopped the attempts, but it at least saves me from having to remove dozens of spam comments every morning.

Pages:
– The most popular pages were the usual suspects:  The RSS feed, the backcountry page, the blog, the homepage, and the guestbook.
– The most popular photo albums were My Broken Leg, Celerity PGE Project (thanks to the buzzboard link), Pico Blanco, Hetch Hetchy Backpack, and Clouds Rest.

Referrers:
– Google was the top referrer, followed by Google Image Search and Yahoo Search
– The top search engine phrases were:  clouds rest, wapama falls, mount dana, lost coast trail, and fedak

Thanks for visiting everybody.
