Had a followup visit with my OS a few weeks back to make sure everything was still in place before I start the summer hiking season. Everything looked as good as could be expected and I'm not a candidate to have the hardware removed. The pins were still where they were supposed to be and I've got a minor amount of arthritis in the foot.
The only real outcome is that he recommended taking Glucosamine suppliments.

Thanks for putting your ankle story here. I broke my ankle 4 weeks ago requiring 11 screws and a plate. I was sitting here wondering if I would ever go hiking again…I’m 49 years old and my youngest son is now 7 which means for the first time in 21 years, our whole family can hike together! (I’ve always had babies/toddlers in tow). And then my ankle broke, putting a wrench into the hiking plans. After doing a quick search on “broken ankle, hiking” I found your blog. THANK YOU so much for your encouraging report and your testimony that one CAN resume a (somewhat) normal regime after an ankle break. Right now, given my uncomfortable and limited range of motion, I needed to hear that! -Jill
I concur with what Jill has said to you. I too am so thankful for you sharing your story…which is encouraging for me. I actually broke my foot. This is now 13 weeks since my 2nd surgery. I hope you realize how inspiring your words are to us. You have a fan. Mary
